Website domains and page URLs

Who

Web Strategy Group (WSG) is responsible for determining or approving website domains and URLs for any public-facing library website. For individual web pages on our main website, the Content Strategist can decide or choose to consult with WSG.

How

WSG will take into account branding, identity, findability, technical feasibility, and information architecture. They will consider input and suggestions from stakeholders, and will follow best practices for domains, identifying ones that are short, easy to spell, easy to guess, and meaningful. They will refer to Usability.gov's Creating Usable Domain Names or Nielsen Norman Group's URL as UI.

Separate websites

Who

Web Strategy Group (WSG) is responsible for determining whether or not a service, event, product, or space gets a separate website and separate website domain outside our main site (lib.arizona.edu).

How

The default is to keep as much library content as possible on the main site. WSG can make exceptions for cases such as where there is a unique audience, where it is a campus-level initiative, where unique features are required, or if it is a special event.

Separate content management systems

Who

WSG creates and maintains guidelines about which content goes where based on features and characteristics of different systems. For example, see Guidelines for LibGuides vs. Drupal vs. LibAnswers (these guidelines are evolving).

How

Our primary content management system for our main website is Drupal, and we aim for a consistent user experience and efficient content workflows. We consider other content management systems based upon: 1) features and characteristics, 2) support for content and the content manager(s), and 3) limiting the number of tools we support.

Secondary navigation changes

Who

Secondary navigation items, which are those not seen from our global menu structure, are usually a collaboration between the content manager and the Content Strategist. Depending on the significance of the change, WSG or WSG core might be consulted or informed of the change.

How

Like all navigation changes, we'll try our best to use data to inform our decisions and follow our content principles and content style guide.
