Borrow technology card sort analysis
Main recommendations:
- Most participants sorted laptops and tablets into the same category. We were also unsure whether to categorize a Surface Pro as a “laptop” or a “tablet.” To resolve both issues, we recommend listing laptops and tablets in the same category.
- Many participants created a large category called “accessories.” Many participants also created a category with “adaptors” and/or “power” in the name. Based on these findings, we recommend creating two categories for laptop/tablet peripherals: “Adaptors & power cords” and “Laptop/tablet accessories.”
- Participants tended to group monitor, Bluetooth keyboard, and mouse. We recommend placing these items in the same category, “Laptop & tablet accessories.”
- Some items fit in multiple categories, so we recommend allowing items to be listed in multiple categories.
Additional considerations:
- Bob recommends having an image of one item per category card on the Borrow technology webpage. This is one rationale for keeping laptops and tablets in separate categories. Surface Pros and other genre-defying devices could be listed in both categories.

The current prototype has separate categories for laptops and tablets, and each category has one device image.
- Some participants listed audio and video equipment in separate categories. The “Audio/visual & recording equipment” category could be split into two categories, “Audio recording equipment” and “Video recording equipment,” but we don’t recommend this.
- We also need to consider whether to keep equipment and accessories together or separate.
Recommended categories:
Items marked with an asterisk (*) are listed in more than one category. (Categories can be skipped in breadcrumbs.)
